Rationale Wiki FAQs

What's a wiki?

A website that you can edit through your browser.  The Wikipedia entry on wikis is gives an excellent summary.

Who can edit this wiki?

Any registered user.  Austhink keeps this wiki password-protected to keep out junk, spam etc...  But any reputable person can become a registered user.

How do I become a registered user?

Contact us at enquiries@austhink.com and we will send you a password.

Is there a guide to contributing to the wiki?

Yes, check out the Contributor's Guide. It can also be dowloaded and printed for easy reference: Contributor Guide.pdf

How do I add stuff to the wiki?

There are two ways to do this - either upload files (maps, images, documents) and attach them to pages, or simply type directly onto wiki pages.

Which option should I choose for adding stuff?

That depends on what you want to contribute.  If you want to make a short comment, or attach a file with a brief description, then edit an existing page by typing directly onto it.  If you want to type more lengthy material directly onto a wiki page (and maybe attach files as well) then make a new page for your contribution.

How do I upload a file to the wiki?

  1. In editing mode, click 'Attach File' on the toolbar.
  2. When the dialogue box opens, browse for your file, select and open it, and then click 'upload'.
  3. With your file selected (indicated by the bold typeface), click 'Ok".
  4. Click 'Save' to exit the editor.

When do I make a new page?

There are two occasions for this:

  1. If your contribution doesn't fit into an existing category on the wiki front page you can make a new category page.  For example, if you want to add maps on the racing industry or the banking industry you would make a link under the 'professional users' heading and create a new page off there called 'racing' or 'banking'.
  2. If your contribution fits into an existing category but you don't want to simply attach a file with a brief description, then create a new page off the category page. For example, if you want to type some argument-mapping jokes directly onto a wiki page and insert a cartoon image with them, then go to the 'just for fun' category page, create a new page off that, then type your jokes and insert your cartoon on the new page.

How do I create a new page?

  1. Enter editing mode by clicking 'Edit Page'.
  2. Click 'Link' in the toolbar.
  3. When the dialogue box opens, select 'WikiPage' in the 'Link Type' dropdown menu.
  4. In 'New page name', type the name of your page.
  5. The name of your page will also appear in 'Link text'. If you want to change the wording of the link to your page, edit the link text here.
  6. Click 'Ok'.
  7. Click 'Save' to exit editing mode.
  8. Click the link to the page you have just created and you will be taken to 'Create a new page'. You do not need to make any changes, simply click 'Create new page'.
  9. You can then edit your new page.

How do I insert an image?

  1. In editing mode, click 'Insert Image' in the toolbar.
  2. When the dialogue box opens, broswe for your file, select and open it, and then click 'upload'.
  3. With your file selected (indicated by the bold typeface), click 'ok'.

How do I create a Rationale map that can be dragged onto the workspace?

You do this by adding a link to an image of your map:

  1. Upload a Rationale map of the content that you want to make draggable.
  2. Insert an image of your map on your wiki page.
  3. Right click on the image and select 'image properties'.
  4. Click the 'Link' tab in the dialogue box.
  5. Enter the URL of your Rationale file and click 'Ok'. The URL will be either /f/yourfilename.rtnl, or the full URL http://wiki.austhink.com/f/yourfilename.rtnl

Comment: I've found that this doesn't work in IE7; I had to use Firefox instead.

Comment: You can create linked images in IE7 if you insert the Rationale file first, then highlight the file and add an image in the normal way.
